Eighteen Days in June, Softbound

$44.95

This body of work was made during Buelteman’s 1996 residency at the world-renowned Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Woodside California, and was subsequently published in the year 2000 as a fund-raising vehicle for the program’s endowment.  With an introduction by former Poet Laureate of the United States under President Bill Clinton, Robert Hass, the collection is a testament to the power of “The Gift of Time” for which the program is known. Made with film that is blind to visible light but sensitive to the infra-red spectrum, these images reach beyond the perceivable to the ineffable world beyond human sight.

Printed in Italy, the book measures 11 x11 inches and contains 102 pages and is both the record of a personal journey out of grief over the loss of members of the photographer's family and a visual tribute to the special place that facilitated his healing. The forty-seven tri-tone reproductions of the Djerassi Ranch, home to the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, capture the wild beauty of its setting in the hills of Woodside, California.

His use of a small camera and infrared-sensitive film allowed the photographer to experiment both technically and philosophically, a departure he says he never would have made without the support of the program. The book's elegant design and large square format contribute to the quiet mood of reflection projected by the images.

Robert Buelteman is an acknowledged master of light and texture, and images that make up this portfolio all have an ephemeral, surreal quality the reader will find compelling.  Eighteen Days in June includes an essay by Robert Haas, former Poet Laureate of the United States of America, and former trustee of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program. The body of the portfolio follows Haas's introduction, with photographs and quotations from the artist sequenced in an interpretive array, as edited by Robert McDonald. Printed in Italy, this book stands apart from commercially produced art books in its elegant design and extraordinary printing quality.  Free shipping. USA only.
